Detecting vorticity in cohesive deformable granular material

چکیده

Numerical models of granular materials are useful in tribology, and can be used to predict wear friction contacts. DEM-like simulations model particles third-body, which partly debris from rubbing bodies. It has been shown that the third-body have different flow regimes, depending on their mechanical properties. Among characteristics agglomerate size seems crucial. A method based vortex analysis fluid mechanics allows characterizing this cluster size. The results show sizes observed during simulation. In particular, it is some vortexes a characteristic persist over time, could representative agglomerates. These pave way for better characterisation regimes.

Fracture of a model cohesive granular material.

We study experimentally the fracture mechanisms of a model cohesive granular medium consisting of glass beads held together by solidified polymer bridges. The elastic response of this material can be controlled by changing the cross-linking of the polymer phase, for example. Here we show that its fracture toughness can be tuned over an order of magnitude by adjusting the stiffness and size of t...

A cohesive granular material with tunable elasticity

By mixing glass beads with a curable polymer we create a well-defined cohesive granular medium, held together by solidified, and hence elastic, capillary bridges. This material has a geometry similar to a wet packing of beads, but with an additional control over the elasticity of the bonds holding the particles together. We show that its mechanical response can be varied over several orders of ...

Fracture pattern formation in frictional, cohesive, granular material.

Naturally, deformed rocks commonly contain crack arrays (joints) forming patterns with systematic relationships to the large-scale deformation. Kinematically, joints can be mode-1, -2 or -3 or combinations of these, but there is no overarching theory for the development of the patterns. We develop a model motivated by dislocation pattern formation in metals. The problem is formulated in one dim...

Where does a cohesive granular heap break?

In this paper, we consider the effect of cohesion on the stability of a granular heap and compute the maximum angle of stability of the heap as a function of the cohesion. We show that the stability is strongly affected by the dependence of the cohesion on the local pressure. In particular, this dependence is found to determine the localization of the failure plane. While for a constant adhesio...

Granular packings of cohesive elongated particles

We report numerical results of effective attractive forces on the packing properties of two-dimensional elongated grains. In deposits of non-cohesive rods in 2D, the topology of the packing is mainly dominated by the formation of ordered structures of aligned rods. Elongated particles tend to align horizontally and the stress is mainly transmitted from top to bottom, revealing an asymmetric dis...
